Gadsden Renovation-Before and Middle

Everyone loves a good before and after. Luckily there will be a future post covering that. We happened to be in the area of this renovation we designed in April, which is a good ways away from our office, so today you get a “before” and “middle”, if you will… Fortunately the transformation is already apparent, just forgive the stray boxes and sheetrock dust. We will do a “pretty” post soon! We were privileged to design a custom home for the homeowner’s parents a few years back, and they referred us for the project. The couple had purchased the home with plans to improve, but were unsure what to do with the existing segmented space and wanted to design a new layout for most of the main floor as well as a second floor master bath. The original main floor was very cut up and lacked flow, especially in the kitchen.

Upon entering the home, you looked straight into the blank wall of the existing Powder Room that separated the Foyer and Kitchen. We relocated the Powder around the corner to open up the space and improve the traffic flow in and out of the kitchen. Large windows and french doors were added in the kitchen to improve functionality and allow natural light into the space.

Off the rear of the existing kitchen was an added sunroom, accessed by a small cased opening in the original exterior brick wall. We removed this wall, allowing an expanded kitchen and large entertaining island.

The kitchen was also very closed off from the Great Room. We expanded the with and depth of the opening. Existing walls were removed in the former Powder and Study locations, making space for a walk-in pantry, butler’s pantry and much more spacious Great Room.

An added covered porch was added between the Kitchen and Great Room. We will have a picture of this on the completed project post. The second floor master bath, was in desperate need of a new layout as well. The existing pre-fab decked tub was replace with a new free-standing tub and was relocated below an existing window on the rear wall of the room. The double vanity was moved to the existing tub location. The toilet was turned and enclosed in a private room, and the existing pre-fab shower was replaced with a glassed-in, fully tiled shower in the original vanity location. We are very excited about the progress thus far, and look forward to post the completed project soon.
