Frusterio Design, Inc. was contacted in the Fall of 2009 to design a custom horse barn to accompany the home we designed for the family a couple of months earlier. The home and barn are located in an equestrian community in Birmingham, Alabama. We worked with the family, who had definitely done their research, to design a barn that would provide a guest living space, as well as ample room to feed, clean and shelter the family’s horses. A wrap-around porch provides outdoor seating to enjoy views of the main house as well as grazing horses. A main living area, with a 12′ ceiling, contains a kitchenette and eating area. Off of the living area is a private bedroom and bath and storage area. There is an internal access door from the living area into the main barn aisle. Off of the aisle are five stalls, a tack and wash room and stairs to the upper level hay loft. Custom designed 5’6″ wide sliding barn doors flank each side of the aisle. An extended covered area off of the stalls allows exterior cover for the horses as well as storage for tractors and equipment. We replicated the stone and wood facade of the main house to allow the two structures to compliment each other. The design translated into a beautiful barn that is enjoyed by humans and horses alike!
